Archie's broken Elbow

Even Hippies can break their arms
Blast from the Past

butter wouldn't melt - or are you airing your armpit?
clingfilm and plastic bags are very useful at shower time!
dread to think what his arm will be like inside that cast, with heat of 34c and high humidity, along with Balinese sand!
Archie can still beat Granny at Connect 4
I am laughing!

Oh no not again - another injury! Its his right arm too!

Archie was running in the Roof Garden at school and tripped and fell and banged his elbow. We went and had rays, but as it was so sore, he couldn't straighten it. He had a backslab bandaged on and we went back a week later. Suspected fracture. A week later he slipped on the stairs and landed on ------------- yes, the same elbow, so we went and had the whole arm put in a cast, just in time to go on holiday to Bali!

Singapore Air Show

Doug, Archie and Niall went along to this, which was extremely efficieint, but sadly so that there weren't any great displays like the Red Arrows, and they weren't able to go onboard any of the planes. Oh well, at least it didn't rain!

Corinna's Dressage Competitions

Very smart, even after Mo had got red salt lick all over his face and mane overnight!
Greys are difficult to keep clean!

Corinna having just finished her Preliminary Level 1.A

The boys had great fun swimming ..........

Thaipusan Festival - Not for the feint hearted!!

babies have their heads shaved
the man has a walking stick, he must be walking on nails
arriving at the final temple in a trance, and severe pain
a kavadis milk pot
lost of food and drink for everyone to eat
onlookers are happily allowed - Mummy & Daddy a little shocked!
through his cheeks and tongue
limes hooked on

the framework supported by the belt, bells hooked to his thighs
shoes of nails

Thaipusan is a Hindu festival that takes place only in Singapore and Malaysia as it is now banned everywhere else.

The Thaipusan (also Thaipusam) Festival is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Murugan. The festival is celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb).

Kavadi literally means burden. The burden however can take many forms. A kavadi can be something as simple as pot of milk (paal kudam) carried on the head to be given as an offering to Murugan. Many kavadi are a simple wooden arch that has been decorated. The large kavadis can weigh close to 40 kilos. They are often decorated with peacock feathers and have a picture of Murugan on them. They are in fact miniature shrines. What sets these shrines apart however is that they are anchored to the body with a metal belt. Hanging down from the kavadis are chains with hooks at the end. The hooks are inserted into the body. Some may have steel poles coming down that pierce the body. At the extreme are those that are pulling a cart behind them with ropes attached to the hooks in their back.
some of them also walk with wooden shoes with nails sticking up.

They make their pilgrimage by walking with family and friends from the first temple to the final temple where they are able to remove their Kavadis

It looks very revolting, but it was quite fascinating.

They also shave the babies heads as their penance.

Visit from Mummy and Daddy 26-30th January 2010

A few days with us getting over jetlag before going on
a cruise from Bali to Phuket
Little and big trouble!
We visited the tailor and Mummy had 2 pairs of trousers made for her

Mummy is looking rather small now!

We went to the Singapore City Gallery and saw 3D models of the CBD of Singapore and outlying areas, very interesting

We went out to dinner at Indochine by the Ancient Civilisation Museum opposite Boat Quay

and walked back along the river.

We went to the Sungei Wetlandn Reserve north of Kranji and had
the reserve to ourselves and quite a few Monitor Lizards, lots of wading birds and tree crabs!

Crabs in mangrove trees!

big ones and little monitor lizards

quite a few hides to watch the waders

having a well earned rest

Archie managed to win despite being a one armed bandit!
